I began my legal career in 1992 after receiving my J.D. degree from Regent University School of Law in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Graduating in the top twenty percent of my class provided me with the privilege to work for a year as a federal law clerk at the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C.
In 1993, I secured a staff attorney's position at the National Legal Foundation in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I litigated First Amendment religious liberty and free speech cases all across America in federal and state courts and filed briefs with appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court. I also drafted a comprehensive set of public school policies dealing with First Amendment issues which the Virginia Department of Education relied upon in drafting its own guidelines on the role of religion in the public schools.
After defending First Amendment rights I starting fighting for private property rights in 1996 at Defenders of Property Rights in Washington, D.C. As a staff attorney I litigated land use regulation cases involving the Fifth Amendment's Takings Clause on behalf of farmers, ranchers, and small landowners. During this time, I also assisted in preventing the closure of a farm after the enactment of environmental regulations and helped stop the closing of a dairy due to zoning changes.
In 1997 I opened my solo practice in Richmond, Virginia. Over the years my practice has involved a broad and deep swath of experience, including, among other matters: plaintiff and defendant civil litigation, business formation, buying and selling of businesses, business litigation, real property development and construction litigation, zoning and land use litigation, condemnation, criminal defense, plaintiff personal injury litigation, wills, trusts, and estate planning, divorce, custody, visitation, child support, and appointment as a guardian ad litem for children. Whether avoiding federal and state litigation against a farmer through compliance counseling about environmental regulations or arguing an appeal regarding the right of a homeowner to just compensation for the taking of a drainage easement, I continue to defend private property rights.
Over the years I have represented clients in all types of tribunals from contractors in administrative hearings to arguing for injured people in jury trials. I have also assisted clients in avoiding litigation by navigating multi-million dollar business buy outs to advising doctors regarding Medicare law compliance to assisting private associations in dealing with zoning laws.
In addition to my solo practice, I still continue to assist the National Legal Foundation with filing briefs with the U.S. Supreme Court in landmark First Amendment cases. I'm admitted to practice in both state and federal courts in Virginia and the U.S. Supreme Court.
